Environments Design

Canopy Wine Bar

A new retail development in northern Ohio had earmarked a small site for an outdoor wine pavilion. The developer was looking for a concept so their architect held an internal competition to gather submissions. We sought out to create a flexible and inviting space that could be used year round.

Concept Development

In viticulture, a grapevine canopy includes all the elements above ground- the trunk, cordon, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruit. The result is an architectural form, a post-supported overhead plane with irregular apertures, that filters daylight and provides a sense of enclosure. This was used as the inspiration for the space.

Space Planning

The design focused not only on creating an inviting outdoor pavilion but included the flexibility to enclose the space for the colder months. A moveable glass wall allowed for both spaces to be included and seamlessly transition from one to another depending on the time of year.

The trellis structure mimics the form of the canopy. It rises out of the ground forming outdoor seating, a privacy screen, and an overhead plane that extends into the building helping blur the transition from interior to exterior.
